PE Statement Of Curriculum Intent

Faculty Introduction

Our PE Vision
To ensure that all students at St Paul’s Value PE, enjoy PE and leave us with a passion for physical activity or sport.

The PE Department aim to achieve our vision by providing the students with the opportunity to experience a broad and balanced curriculum that will challenge, inspire and motivate them to progress and achieve the highest level they possibly can.

KS3

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 receive 2 x 1 hour PE lesson per week. Across these lessons, they receive a varied curriculum ranging from many sports including basketball, rugby, dance, badminton, netball, athletics, cricket and trampolining. Students are assessed in the different sports but also in their leadership skills, character in sport and some of the basics of GCSE PE theory.

Students in year 9 receive 1 hour of core PE per week and can start to specialise in the areas of leadership, fitness and team games. Students are still assessed in line with year 7 and 8 but because they are specialising they can push for the highest grades in preparation for GCSE Physical Education.

KS4

Students in Year 10 and Year 11 receive 1 hour of core PE per week. The students have an opportunity to study for a Level 2 Certificate in Sports Leadership. At this stage we encourage the students to take more responsibility for their own lessons and they experiment with a number of different roles within the activities allowing them to become more independent and boost their confidence.
Students who choose to study academic PE at KS4 follow the OCR Cambridge National Sport Studies syllabus to gain a GCSE equivalent grade in Sport Studies at the end of Year 11.

KS5

Students in Y12 have the option to choose an enrichment subject from a variety of activities but they can also choose to study for a Level 3 Certificate in Sports Leadership. Students in Year 12 have the option to study either A Level Physical Education or a Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport (equivalent to an A Level).

Extra-Curricular Activities:

Extra-curricular PE plays a vital role at St Paul’s and we have an extensive programme including lunch-time and after school clubs. We enter teams in a large number of city wide School Games Competitions and other competitions. We also run inter-form competitions for all year groups. We have had a lot of success last year and reached the County finals in 4 age groups for Basketball, 2 age groups for football and the County Indoor Athletics Competition We also had a fantastic year for netball running A and B teams at various age groups.
