On Thursday 6 June, a team of year 8 students attended the Salters Festival of Chemistry at Leicester University. Together they worked alongside 17 other schools who had each brought a team of 4 students. The day consisted of two challenges:
The morning ‘Salters Challenge’ was a forensics activity called ‘one of our elements is missing’, which saw the students use chemical tests and chromatography on samples left at a crime scene to identify a thief. The afternoon activity had students tackle the ‘university challenge’ where they were to use separation techniques to separate four samples from a mixture. They were monitored by the judges!
The day ended with a really brilliant physical demonstration of ‘Magic Science’. The lecturer made fire tornadoes, jelly babies scream, chemicals fluoresce and liquid nitrogen freeze flowers! It was great fun! An enjoyable day was had and a huge well done to our team of Oluwatoni, Abigail, Daniel and Orla who achieved a fantastic 2nd place in the Salters competition! Their passion for science, team work and resilience shone through!
